Adam Irigoyen — who has guest starred on shows like Wizards of Waverly Place and Good Luck Charlie — is no stranger to television but when it came to filming a movie, he was a newbie up until last year. The Shake It Up star's new movie Underdog Kids, in which he stars alongside Big Hero 6's Ryan Potter, was just released on DVD. Luckily, M scored an interview with the young star and he dished on everything from behind-the-scenes secrets to his co-star Ryan!
"It was a really cool experience to film. It was my first independent film, it was actually my first film period cause before that I had only done TV, never a full length film so that was cool," Adam dishes EXCLUSIVELY to M. "And just the experience of getting to learn a little bit of martial arts and filming all over LA with a great cast and crew, it was just really fun for me."
Speaking of martial arts, Adam was a complete beginner when he started filming. The
"It was very basic stuff I learned cause I’ve never done martial arts before so it was very basic but you know we had amazing stunt choreographers and we had an amazing cameraman who made me look a lot more, a lot better at martial arts than I probably am," Adam reveals.
"Thankfully, for them at least, we all picked it up pretty fast so that was really cool to know that we have that ability!"
Adam's right — it's so incredibly cool that he now has some martial arts under his belt (literally!). But learning some cool new moves isn't the only thing Adam was outspoken about. He also expressed the important message he hopes kids take away from the project after watching it.
"I kind of hope they understand that it’s kind of like a respect your elders kind of feel in the middle of the movie. You know listening to not only Big Mama but it’s kind of that thing where I want people to really understand that this is, yeah, a movie about martial arts which is all cool and fun to watch, but this is really a kind of love-your-family-feel-good movie," Adam dishes.
We think it's so cool that Underdog Kids has a strong familial theme. Speaking of families, did you know that Adam and his co-star Ryan are kind of like fam? They've been friends for years — way before they did this movie together!
"Ryan is the bomb," Adam admits. "Ryan and I have been friends before [this] actually because of the
whole Disney/Nick thing. So we had known each other and so it was really cool to finally work with him and have scenes with him, that was fun!"
Now that Underdog Kids is available on DVD, be sure to pick up your copy ASAP. Tell us in the comments below: What's the most surprising thing Adam said in our interview?
