Fans were super sad to find out earlier this week that Ross Butler is parting ways with his role as Reggie Mantle on The CW series Riverdale. There has been such a buzz around the new fan-favorite show, which resulted in the series being renewed for a second season – yay!
Although the rest of the cast will be coming back for more, Ross has to say goodbye. Why, you ask? Well, the reason actually makes a lot of sense. Ross' character is going to be a major part of the upcoming episodes, and Ross is going to be too busy with another project to fulfill his Riverdale duties. So the only option was to recast him.
So what does the cast think about Ross leaving? Cole Sprouse opened up about the decision to recast Reggie.
"We talk about Reggie, everyone talks about Reggie, and we all very much want Reggie to be one of the fundamental characters that he deserves to be according to the digests," the Disney Channel alum said in an interview. "The truth is, the antagonizing nature of Reggie within the show would be a wonderful, wonderful balance for Archie's narratives. It's something Roberto and I had talked about a little bit, and is understood. Obviously, we want to see more. We all want to see more."
This is a sentiment that the creator of the series, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, echoed when he spoke to told TVLine about the decision to recast Reggie.
"We love what Ross did with the role of Reggie [this season], but because of his commitments to other projects, we couldn’t use him nearly as much as we would have liked," Roberto explained. "[Next season], we want more Reggie on our show — he’s Archie’s rival! — and because Ross is unavailable to come back to Riverdale, we’re looking for a new Reggie. Those are big shoes to fill, but we’re confident we can find an actor who is as funny and [hot] as Ross. And of course we all wish Ross the best."
So sad! But wait – there is a bright side to the situation. Given the fact that Ross will be working on another project leads fans to believe that his other show 13 Reasons Why will be coming back for another season. It's not out of the question. After all, executive producer of the show Selena Gomez has even said it's a possibility. Let's keep our fingers crossed!
