Gigi Hadid found herself in a very unsafe situation during Milan Fashion Week. While leaving a fashion show and making her way to the car, Gigi was grabbed and completely picked up from off the ground by a total stranger. The attack caused something inside Gigi to switch. In that moment of terror, she immediately followed her instinct and defended herself.
“I started boxing two years ago, and I always remembered that. Since then, I hadn’t been in a situation that forced me to fight back, but it just came out when he grabbed me — it wasn’t a choice. I do have that fighter in me," she told Lena Dunham in an interview.
Gigi went on to explain that early reports of the incident made it seem like the model "lashing out" at a stranger. She went on to explain that she reacted that way for an important reason.
"Honestly, I felt I was in danger, and I had every right to react the way I did.”
Gigi wants girls to learn from her frightening experience, as self-defense is an extremely valuable skill to have.
"If anything, I want girls to see the video and know that they have the right to fight back, too, if put in a similar situation," she continued. "Practicing self-defense is important so that when you’re in the moment, reacting from muscle memory comes more naturally to you than freezing up.”
We love how Gigi didn't just let that guy take advantage of her. She was her own hero.
"Confidence in your own ability to defend yourself comes with educating yourself about it, and is a massive advantage when in an unsafe situation."
We hope no one is ever in the situation where they have to use self-defense, but the bravery Gigi displayed sets a great example of what to do when faced with danger.
