When Niall Horan just casually dropped his debut solo single "This Town" on the world, literally no one saw it coming. He wasn't the most obvious choice for which remaining member of One Direction will officially go solo first (since you know, Zayn Malik already did that while the band was still together), but alas, Niall did and he's given us all one truly lovely tune. And now, the singer has opened up in a new interview about when he decided to take on the music world by himself.
"I got back from backpacking in Southeast Asia in the end of February so in March or April it started writing and "This Town" was actually one of the first songs I wrote," Niall said. "I generally just wanted to chill [after One Direction] and then writing came around again like it always does and here we are. I generally just wanted to do nothing. Being out in Asia, I spent a lot of time traveling so I had a load of time to write down a lot of ideas and that's where a lot of my [song] ideas came from."
So it looks like this was something that just naturally came about, and not what he was plotting to do all along. His passion is songwriting and making music after all, so it does make sense. Niall went on to explain that although the actual process of writing songs wasn't much different from his 1D days, he definitely did have to keep a few things in mind this time around, since it's only his voice that will be on these records and playing them live.
"The writing [part] was no different, apart from I wasn't really writing big choruses or anything like that. I was just writing to suit me, completely me since I have to sing every one of them, which is different," he said.
And for all the ultimate Niall fans out there, hearing a whole album's worth of songs featuring only his lovely voice is going to be simply amazing.
