OMG: The 'Riverdale' Cast Spills All the Secrets Surrounding That Heart-Stopping Season Finale

The first season of Riverdale has come to an end and umm, what an ending it was. Seriously, there were so many twists and turns, moments that made you actually say OMG out loud, scenes that made your heart burst (courtesy of Bughead and Archie and Veronica's budding romance of course), and then one final scene that legit knocked the wind out of you. What a finale it was and like always, the cast has spilled some behind-the-scenes secrets that will have to hold you over until next season. Let's begin:

Spoiler alert if you haven't watched Episode 13 yet:

KJ Apa, better known as the redhead with a heart of gold Archie Andrews, took to Twitter to let everyone know that during the season finale, he actually broke his hand and we got to see that jaw-dropping scene play out. Archie, along with Betty, Jughead and Veronica, headed out to Sweetwater River, which was now frozen over since it's wintertime, to save Cheryl after she fell into the ice-covered river.

Archie had to punch the ice to break a hole in it in order to get Cheryl out, and this is where KJ literally gave it his all, punching the ice and eventually breaking his hand IRL. His co-star Lili Reinhart gave his some major proper for his commitment to the intense scene.

But she clarified that the blood on his hand wasn't real, so it wasn't as graphic IRL.

Madelaine Petsch, who plays Cheryl, shared a photo from that day the cast and crew filmed this intense scene, revealing how everyone really pitched in to maker her feel as comfortable as possible since was in legit soaked.

"This is BTS from Archie & the gang saving Cheryl. I was sopping wet and freezing & KJ had broken his hand. Between shots Lili was breathing on me for warmth, Cami was hugging me, KJ carrying me & TJ helping him, Cole was (of course) taking the photo," she wrote. "I'm so lucky to be able to call these people my family & Riverdale my home. This past year has been the best of my life. Thank you all for coming along on this journey & sharing a piece of our hearts. I feel so grateful for this ride & it's only the beginning. Season 2 here we come."

How amazing is that?! Lili was tweeting from both her personal account and Marie Clarie's's, since she did a takeover during the east coast airing of the episode last night, and she revealed that the scene of pure happiness between Betty, Veronica, Archie and Jughead in Pop's enjoying some milkshakes together was the last one the core four did together. And Cole Sprouse even got sick from the shakes!

Speaking of Jughead, so what exactly is in store for him and Betty? As you saw, Jughead got sent to live with a foster family and he won't be attending Riverdale High with his GF and his best friends anymore. Plus, the Serpents let Juggy know he's one of them now that his dad F.P. is still in jail, so that's already screaming drama central. Executive producer of the show Roberto Aguirre-Sacasaspoke to Nerdist about what this means for Bughead's relationship.

"For Betty, she’s afraid she’s losing Jughead and him going down the same path that F.P. went down. That’s going to make her anxious and even more worried that she and Jughead are drifting apart. When Betty gets an idea in her head, she attacks the problem ferociously, sometimes even irrationally, so they’re in for some drama as well," Robert explained.

Ahh, we can't even think about what these two are going to endure together. And there's always the love triangle of Archie/Betty/Veronica from the comic books that will still linger in the show.

"The love triangle will always be a big part of the show and the mythology. Archie and Betty have a very deep history. They’ve known each other for a long time and there are feelings there. They will bubble up at the worst time," Robert teased. "Now there’s Jughead and Veronica, and he did think when they were older, eventually [he and Betty] would get together. It’s not that he’s in love with her but he thought he was going to marry her when they were kids. We’ll be playing that love triangle 100 percent."

OH EM GEE, now that is going to shake things up for sure. The final scene of the episode shows Archie's dad Fred getting shot during a robbery at Pop's, where he and Archie were meeting up for breakfast. We know, it was just tragic! This for sure was a shocking moment to viewers, and Cole said it was to many of the cast too.

"We changed the ending halfway through. They kept it so top secret even from the cast and crew that we were given the final form the day of shooting. The people who were not in that scene, didn't even get to read it," Cole said.

Well glad we weren't the only ones totally caught off guard by what happened to poor Fred. We hope for Archie's sake his dad makes it out alive, but with Riverdale being the dark and twisted town it is, only time will tell. Until next season!
