Ryan McCartan is best known to fans as Diggie Smalls, the quirky, charming, guitar playing jock who totally snags Maddie's heart on Liv and Maddie. Their relationship was one of the sweetest on the series, since there was a time when the characters were involved with a love triangle once Maddie started dating Josh, and the fact that Ryan and Dove Cameron were a couple in real life definitely fueled fans' love for this pairing.
But after getting engaged, Dove and Ryan split, and since then, the series is over for good, with the finale episode airing back in March. He just now finally revealing what he really thinks about his time on the Disney Channel series. In Ryan's "Me Monday" YouTube series, he revealed that he had two auditions for dream roles on Broadway, but he wasn't physically able to make it to the first audition and the second one he thought he nailed, he never heard back from. And that's when Liv and Maddie came into his life.
"I was thinking life is not fair. And then the next I got an audition for a silly little role on a silly new TV show. At the time it was called Bits and Pieces and my agent told me they were probably going to change the name to the two girls who the show was about: Liv and Maddie," he explained. "So I go in and audition and I'm like, 'this role is actually kind of fun.' They called me back, and then they called me back again and then I had a screen test with the girl who was playing both roles and who at the time was a total unknown. And I went and did the screen test. And they cast me. "
So Ryan had two other roles that possibly could've interfered with is chance to star as Diggie, since he never would've gone to that very first audition for the show had he been doing something else. He is forever grateful for this, since being cast on Liv and Maddie literally changed his life, bringing him his relationship with Dove and essentially more roles he only ever dreamed of playing.
"If I went Broadway and didn't book that role, I never would've met someone who changed my entire life. If I would've booked the Broadway role and not that role, I never would've met the guy who ended up casting me in Heathers: The Musical. And Heathers LA is where a man named Kenny Ortega who saw me and said my performance was something he would never forget and a year later, he cast me in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, one of the best experiences of my entire life," Ryan said.
How crazy is that to think about? This really proves that Ryan was meant to be on this one Disney Channel show, since it brought him so much. His romance with Dove might've not lasted forever like he had hoped, but he who knows if they ever would've even met if he hadn't booked the role of Diggie. What a time.
