The Great Gilly Hopkins is a delightful tale of a spunky girl — the great Gilly Hopkins, obviously — who tries to escape her foster home to reunite with her birth mother. The actress who plays the titular character is 16-year-old Sophie Nélisse, and she told M all about her experience filming the movie, from working with stars like Glenn Close and Kathy Bates to her BFFs on set.
"I have to admit, I'm not the type of person to get starstruck. I always see famous people as human beings and not as celebrities. Still, it was amazing to work with such a great cast. I learned so much by working with them and they were all very nice to me. I even got to go to Glenn Close's house for a couple days while we were shooting together," she revealed.
"I remember watching the Stanley Cup at Glenn's house. We were cheering for different teams (mine being the Montreal Canadians, of course) and it was quite funny."
Besides working with some seasoned actors on set, Sophie also dished about filming with one of her good friends, Clare Foley, who plays Agnes. They had a blast behind the scenes!
"During lunch break, Clare and I would always longboard in the streets. At one point, she almost got hit by a car so we weren't allowed to longboard anymore. The most fun scene to film, except the one with the horse, were all the scenes with Clare. We were really good friends, almost like sisters, so all the scenes with her were the most fun ones," she told us.
