If you are as big of a fan of This Is Us as we are over here at M, then you are probably experiencing withdrawal now that the show is on a short hiatus before it returns back for season two. Hearts all over the world break a little more each Tuesday that the show doesn't air. But lucky for This Is Us fanatics, we have some inside scoop about the cast to obsess over in the meantime. M caught up with breakout actor Lonnie Chavis to spill all about his co-stars, and what he revealed will make you love the show even more.
Lonnie, who portrays the younger version of Randall on the show, chatted with us about the relationship he has with the other cast members. The show centers around the lives of a particularly special set of triplets. Due to the fact that the storyline jumps back and forth to different eras of their lives, multiple stars of different ages play each character. Randall stars as one of the kid triplets alongside Mackenzie Hancsicsak (young Kate) and Parker Bates (young Kevin).
Turns out, the squad is just as much of a family IRL as you would have hoped. They spend time together on the reg – especially the kids.
"I hang out with all the kids from the show when we can get together, even the teens. We go to events, get ice cream, or go to dinner," Lonnie exclusively tells us. ""The most fun I had with Mackenzie and Parker on set was shooting the Pilgrim Rick episode because we were out in the woods and it felt like a family camping trip."
So sweet! The fact that the cast is so close actually makes for some pretty funny blooper moments, as they accidentally slip up on each other's names while shooting scenes.
"We call each other by our real names by accident," he confessed.
Given the fact that each character on the show has separate actors playing the kid, teen and adult roles – the This Is Us cast is pretty big. Lonnie says watching Sterling K. Brown (AKA adult Randall) helps him with playing the younger role.
"I watch what Mister Sterling does and apply that to young Randall."
Hold up – did he just call him Mister Sterling? He's officially the cutest.
Lonnie stole the hearts of viewers the moment he appeared on screen, but that comes to no surprise considering the fact that he's actually a lot like the character.
"I really relate to Randall because I am confident with being myself. We also both have 3 really good friends," Lonnie tells us.
Seeing as Lonnie's super famous TV mom Mandy Moore lent her voice to the movie Tangled as the one and only Rapunzel, we asked Lonnie if there are any dream Disney characters he'd like to play.
"I’d like to be the voice of Simba from Lion King and Dumbo because he's a flying elephant!" he dishes.
How cool would that be?! If his acting skills in This Is Us are any indication, we bet Lonnie could snag any role he wants. He's definitely one to look out for.
