A few months back, we found out that Zendaya was going to be starring in the upcoming Spiderman movie called Spider-Man: Homecoming – set to hit theaters in July 2017. Although it's impossible to believe that anyone would have a problem with Zendaya being cast in this film, some took to social media complaining about the concept of having an African American woman play Mary Jane. This is so not OK.
"People are going to react over anything," Zendaya said when addressing the situation in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
Zendaya and her co-stars think it is absolutely ridiculous that people are jumping to conclusions so quickly, as details about Z's character haven't even been announced.
"We just crack up about it, because it's like, 'Whatever you want to think. You'll find out.' It's funny to watch the guessing game."
Whether Z is playing Mary Jane or not, it is absolutely terrible to see anyone reacting with such hatred. For anyone to even put her movie role into question because of her color of her skin is beyond belief.
"But of course there's going to be outrage over that because for some reason some people just aren't ready. I'm like, 'I don't know what America you live in, but from what I see when I walk outside my streets of New York right now, I see lots of diversity and I see the real world and it's beautiful, and that's what should be reflected and that's what is reflected so you're just going to have to get over it.'"
Our hearts break that Zendaya even has to deal with this, but we take comfort in the fact that she is such a strong woman with an uplifting outlook on life. We have no doubt that Z will always keep her head held high.
