Disney Channel Original Movies are all timeless classics. Everyone has a fave — or two, or ten tbh — but none of these movies have ever been turned into TV series. It would make sense to take a successful movie and use it as the premise of a new show, right? Well in a new interview, Gary Marsh, the President and Chief Creative Officer of Disney Channels Worldwide and mastermind behind all of these films being made, spoke about why this happened yet and he frankly just doesn't know why.
"I want to say it’s one of our great frustrations, but it’s unusual that none of them have ever turned into series. I have no good reason why. Some things just have a life of their own and live in a certain space. The ones that had staying power, from a storytelling perspective, we created sequels and threequels," Gary explained.
So that's why certain ones like The Cheetah Girls, Halloweentown and High School Musical have gone to become full-fledged movie sagas. Gary also teased that there is one DCOM in particular he thinks still has the potential to be turned into a series on Disney Channel: Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century.
"[That's] the one that’s always under discussion, and has been perennially. That world can go anywhere. There’s no limit," Gary explained.
Zetus Lapetus, that is MAJOR news! There were three Zenon movies made, so it's easy to understand why a TV show would make perfect sense. All of the films had such totally different plot-lines and up in the space station anything can happen really. Who knows if this DCOM will ever get the TV show treatment, but we'll be here waiting, listening to Protozoa's "Zoom Zoom Zoom."
