Girl Meets World is set to air the series finale this Friday on Disney Channel and frankly, no one is ready to see the show go. It really has become so beloved during it's three-season run and when news broke that Disney Channel decided not to renew it for a fourth season, fans naturally had tons of strong reactions. One of the first steps of mourning a loss is acceptance, but the GMW fandom isn't going down without a fight and it's because of this passion, there are talks that the show might continue after all.
"There are talks underway, but we’re at the very very beginning stages. And I can tell you it’s because of the audience’s reaction to the cancellation that there is interest in other places," Michael said. "For anyone in show business, if you ask them why they’re doing something and they say they’re doing it for themselves, they won’t sustain long. Those that answer 'We’re doing it for the audience' and mean it, they sustain. Networks want to do something to gather an audience. The fact that there is an audience who’s been so loyal says a lot."
How amazing is that?! Fans were really hoping the show would get picked up on Netflix, since the streaming service already has the first two seasons on the site and they are the home to Fuller House, the seque seris to the classic sitcom Full House.
You know Netflix, maybe you should consider continuing with Girl Meets World, think about it. The world would appreciate it. @netflix— 1DColoveforever (@1Dcoloveforever) January 9, 2017
Fans have been working hard on social media to hopefully get Netflix to jump on board, but unfortunately, The Wrap has exclusively learned that Netflix will not be picking up the series after all. This is a bit of a bummer but as fans are pointing out, Netlfix isn;t te onyl streamign service out hrere. There is still hope for Hulu and Amazon to possible keep the show alive.
Along with taking to social media, there is a campaign all about hand-written notes. Paper Airplanes for Girl Meets World is about getting attention the these networks, snail mail style. Fans are encouraged to "Make three paper airplanes, each one small enough to fit in an envelope. Send one to Hulu and one to Netflix requesting that they acquire Girl Meets World and produce new episodes. Then send one more to Disney Channel asking them to please sell the rights if someone offers," the official statement on the site reads.
It's clear that fans' voices are being heard and during a recent radio station stop, Sabrina Carpenter was asked about the potential for more new episodes to come and although she revealed she doesn't know anything, seeing how hard the fans are working means so much to her and her castmates.
This is a sentiment Ben Savage echoed as well.
BMW and GMW fans- We hear you and are very grateful for our loyal audience— Ben Savage (@BenSavage) January 16, 2017
Our hearts are swelling 💗 We see all of your "THANK YOU AUGUST FOR AUGGIE" tweets and we're overwhelmed with love & gratitude. 🙏 😪 just wow— August Maturo (@AugustMaturo) January 16, 2017
All of this fight is being heard and hopefully GMW fans will get the news they've been waiting to hear sometime soon. They're taking on the world, and the world is listening. Hope isn't for suckers after all.
