Joshua Rush has an IMDB page as long as all seven Harry Potter books, so when we asked him to choose one memory from the audition process that really stuck out to him, he had a lot of ground to cover. And while he's hands-down awesome as Toby in the new Netflix original series The Adventures of Puss in Boots, his audition for a movie role came to mind.
The role, which he eventually landed, required that Joshua know the basics of tennis.
“I am far from athletic — like far from athletic — like really far from athletic,” Joshua EXCLUSIVELY tells M. “I loved this part so I was like, 'Okay, I need to learn how to play tennis so that I can tell them in the audition that I actually play tennis.'”
So naturally, Joshua started taking lessons, hoping that it would drastically improve his game by the time it came to try out for the part.
“I started doing tennis lessons, and I was working really, really hard and I ended up getting the part, pretty much right after the audition. I went there and I started actually playing against people who actually knew how to play tennis and that was terrifying,” Joshua admits. “At that point, the bubble kind of popped. I was like, 'Oh, I’m not very good at tennis. That’s right, I suck at sports!'”
So sports isn't Joshua's forte — we still LOVE that he gave the role his all and was dedicated enough to take lessons to improve his performance in the film. Although, it sounds like it ended up working out, after all...
“Actually, my character ended up sucking at sports. So it all worked out in the end,” Joshua laughs.
You go, Joshua! We absolutely love your dedication and willingness to try something new, even if you know it's out of your comfort zone.
Be sure to catch Joshua, the voice of Toby in The Adventures of Puss in Boots on Netflix!
