As any One Direction fan knows, Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson are currently on a break from their time as a band and are each busy working on solo projects. They did leave their beloved Directioners with a priceless gift in the form of their last music video together for their song "History." The video brought on all the feels, since it features clips from the early days, showing how the guys — even including their former bandmate Zayn Malik — shot to their meteoric level of fame while still keeping their brotherhood intact. It's super emotional and was the perfect way to end their first chapter together.
The last scene of the video really hit fans in the heart, since it shows the guys each walking off into their own separate directions.
We know, TEARS. The video’s three directors, Ben Winston, Calvin Aurand and Gabe Turner did do an interview with MTV, where they explained how that ending shot wasn't supposed to be anything deeper than what it was: an ending to that particular video, not necessarily symbolizing the end of the band.
"I think too much has been read into that ending where they walk off in different directions. Because actually, they do run back together at the end. Yeah, originally they ran in separate directions and then they ran back together and that’s actually how it was planned," Ben said.
"It just didn’t look that great. But there certainly wasn’t any… it wasn’t supposed to be them walking off, it was just kind of like an, 'OK, see you in a bit, guys!'" Gabe clarified. Calvin chimed in too, saying that it was just how they chose to end the video.
"I think ultimately it’s just an end to a video. There shouldn’t be anything applied deeper than that," he said.
Of course everyone has been wondering exactly how this visual looks and if this alternate ending would ever see the light of day. Well, it has arrived. That's right, more than a year after the "History" vid made it's debut and only a few days after it won the Brit Award for Video of the Year, the real way the video was supposed to end has surfaced, and it is precious.
Let's reflect on the moment the fellas run back to each other.
THIS. IS. TOO. MUCH. It really is a bit of a more hopeful ending than the one fans got, since it shows that the guys will always be a part of 1D. As for when they will ever get around to that reunion, well that still remains up in the air. Louis recently spoke to Rolling Stone and explained that as of right now, there isn't any set time frame as to when the four lads will properly reunite and make new music together, but they are still the best of friends.
"No one knows the answer right now. Everyone's just enjoying a schedule that's not as relentless and exploring solo projects. I think that's cool. It's really nice, you know when I was at the X Factor, all the boys came along to support me and I think that's what it's all about. People love to write what they want to write but there's no bitterness," Louis said.
Excuse us, we'll be here breaking out the Up All Night album, silently sobbing over the cuteness.
