Pretty Little Liars is about to unveil it's final 10 episodes, and they're promised to be nothing short of jaw-dropping. After all, we're finally going to find out who AD is, the main person targeting the Liars for the last seven years! At this point, it's nearly impossible to picture any other group of actresses bringing Aria, Emily, Hanna, Spencer and Alison to life, but it was just recently revealed that this was actually almost what happened.
The show's creator, Marlene King, along with cast members Ian Harding, Janel Parrish, Sasha Pieterse, Shay Mitchell, Ashley Benson and Tyler Blackburn, were all at PaleyFest for a live panel, where they revealed how the roles of Emily and Hanna would've been so different.
Originally, Marlene had an actress as her first choice to play Emily and Shay was her second pick.
"Marlene told me after [the audition process] that I wasn’t her first choice, and I was like, [sheepishly] 'OK,'" Shay explained.
She obviously ended up blowing Marlene away and she changed her mind once she did a final, live audition in front of Marlene. How crazy would that have been had she stuck with her first choice and not given Shay another chance?! And in case you were wondering exactly how Shay sealed the deal, she credits an actual rock for the luck.
"I was nervous, and I went in there with my good-luck rock. I forget what the actual stone is called, but I picked it up in a store, and I put it in my pocket when I would audition just to keep me grounded and not as nervous," Shay said. "And I still have the rock. I’ve had it for seven years."
Who would've ever thought a legit stone would be the trick to snagging this role? Good to know Shay has kept it all this time too! And she wasn't the only cast member who was almost not cast. Sasha, who plays Alison, originally auditioned for the role of Hanna, along with Bianca Lawson, who played Maya on the series.
"I was going out for Hanna. I tested for Hanna. It was Ashley and I and Bianca. The three of us were testing for Hanna; obviously, Ashley got Hanna. I never really auditioned for Alison. It was just, 'We really like you for this instead.' I’m so happy I ended up being Alison," Sasha revealed.
Imagine if Sasha or Bianca had ended up getting the role of Hanna? Would Ashley have played Ali instead then? So crazy to think about! While the cast was all at the panel too, Sasha and Janel ended up reading a scene that was between Hanna and Mona.
So now we get a glimpse into how the series could've been. Literally mind-blowing but in the end, everything worked out the way it was meant to be.
