Shawn Mendes is best known for writing such super emotional tunes, and when M caught up with him to talk about his partnership with PaperMate, he naturally had plenty to share about why songwriting is so special to him. And it's all thanks to his dad.
"It’s somewhat crazy because writing music is a huge outlet where you get things out that you never knew were there. And I think just writing in general, even if you don’t write music, can do the same thing," Shawn said exclusively to M. "This is actually a funny one. I was with my dad at my house one day, before anything really took off, but it was starting to, and he said 'do you want to be a singer?' I said, 'yes,' and he said, 'well if you want to be a singer you need to learn how to write a song.' So I went upstairs, wrote my first song, and came back downstairs to play it for him. Just to prove I could write a song."
Aww, so that's how Shawn developed his impressive songwriting skills, how sweet! He went to say that although there are still times when he's not always super confident in himself and his music, he manages to just let go of any self-doubt he may be experiencing, no matter what.
"I think it’s a natural thing, and still happens every day. But you somewhat learn that even though you might have doubts, you just have to get up there and put your all into it," Shawn shared with M. "It happens with performing and making music, you’re really showing everyone so much of you, and opening your soul up to them, and you really have to just somewhat make the jump and do it."
Solid words of wisdom right there.
