When Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder split, they were still co-starring on The Vampire Diaries so fans wondered what would happen to the show. Their characters Elena and Damon were madly in love and well, it might be a bit awkward to have to kiss your ex in front of a whole crew and pretend to be happy and in love, especially since Ian went on to marry Nikki Reed, who was said to be one of Nina's friends. Although Nina did leave the series at the end of season six, she has since returned to Mystic Falls to reprise her role as Elena for the upcoming series finale, oh and she snapped a selfie with Nikki and Ian too. Casual.
Nina took to Instagram to share the pic of the trio writing, "Can't believe how time flies. Farewell dinner with team Somereed! So good catching up with these goofballs. All ❤," she wrote in the caption.
OK, WE NEED A MINUTE. These three haven't really publicly hung out together, so this is kind of a big deal. But ultimately, it proves that there isn't any bad blood between them at all and as Nina wrote, it's just nothing but love. Nikki took to her Instagram account too to share another cute pic of the trio, and got even more in-depth about how there has never been any tension between the happily married couple and Nina.
"For the last few years we thought addressing any baseless rumors with silence was the best way. Besides, who wants to respond to made up stories about 'friends backstabbing friends', 'cheating exes', or 'cast members exiting shows.' I now see that silence was taken as an opportunity to fill in the blanks with even more falsities, and juicer stories, and we, yes WE, believe we have a moral responsibility to young girls to end that narrative, because at the end of all of this, those young girls are the ones who lose. Their passion and endless devotion for a tv show is being taken advantage of, replaced with feelings of anger through divisive techniques, & even worse, their minds are being shaped & molded as their view of themselves, other girls, & what those dynamics should look like are being formed," Nikki wrote.
"So here's to putting an end to all those fake stories of on set jealousy, betrayal, made-up-friendships lost & women hating women. Because at the end of the day, that's what this is about: teaching girls that you have to hate other girls only breeds a generation of women who believe you have to hate other women. And that's what these magazines, websites and blogs don't understand. That is the harmful unintended consequence of their stories and we have a moral responsibility to fix that. Let's turn this page together, as we all walk into the next chapter peacefully. And shame on these websites for now targeting an even younger demographic, instilling this at an earlier age when girls are even more susceptible, more vulnerable and more malleable. When we write these headlines we teach hate. I've seen it firsthand. Let's shift what we put into the universe starting now, & hopefully we will start to see a shift in the way we treat each other & view ourselves❤," she concluded.
Nikki and Nina have taken the high road time and time again, and both of their posts will hopefully put any lingering rumors to rest once and for all. Back in 2015 when it was announced that Nina was departing TVD, she did make it clear to fans that this wasn't because of any behind-the-scenes drama between her and her ex in the slightest.
"I've said this before, that we didn't break up because anything bad happened or because there wasn't love or friendship. I love him and the friendship is still strong and I think he's great and I care about him. And that didn't change. Yes, we're professional and that's fine. We were friends long before we dated and we still are now," she explained to E! Online.
She even gushed about how lovely she thought Ian and Nikki's wedding was.
"When I heard about the wedding, I thought it was beautiful. They look happy and I am happy and so I don't see why there should be a problem with that," Nina said. "The drama is in the media, it's not with us. But of course, we're on a teen drama show, everyone's going to look for drama. If there's no drama, there's nothing to write about. I just ignore it."
So there we have it. There was never any issue between Nina, Ian and Nikki and now we have this precious squad selfie to prove it. Nina and Ian worked on a television series for years together and are proof that a solid friendship can stand the test of time. TVD forever indeed.
